Leukocyte InFusion Therapy Begins Clinical Trial
Cancer strategies that focus on boosting the immune system are very attractive. Conventional chemotherapy that destroys the immune system and leaves the person vulnerable to cancers regrowing when chemo is done. Even worse, if chemo fails to destroy cancer cells, the person is left in a worse situation because his or her immune system is severely weakened. This may accelerate the cancer growth significantly. Hence, it makes a lot of sense to focus on boosting the immune system as an alternate strategy. Well, there's finally a clinical trial at Wake Forest that seeks to boost a cancer patient's body with immune system cells from people who are known to have strong anti-cancer fighting immune systems. It's called Leukocyte InFusion Therapy.
You can read about it more at this link: Leukocyte InFusion Therapy Begins Clinical Trial. One thing to note is that the article claims the donor's cancer fighting abilities are highest in the summer. Interesting isn't it? Perhaps this has something to do with sunshine and vitamin D. That said, if you haven't already, I'm sure you'll be interested in reading my article on Vitamin D and cancer.
